You’ve sold your house and now it’s time to plan the big move. It is an exciting time but can also feel overwhelming. This is normal; there is a lot to do in a short amount of time. Here are a few tips to make it as smooth and stress-free as possible.

· If you haven’t already began to downsize, begin now! Not only will you get rid of things that you don’t want in your new home, but you will also have less to pack and less to physically move.
· Begin packing to give yourself ample time to go through your items and pack them thoughtfully and carefully. Packing when you are not in a hurry allows time to pack items properly and will lead to less breakage.
· It’s best to package by room and label each box appropriately. Take an inventory and list what is in each box. This is especially important for boxes that you will need immediately such as kitchen and bathroom items.

If the timeframe just doesn’t work for you, your real estate agent may be able to negotiate an alternate possession date. Most house sales involve the buyer taking possession immediately upon closing; however, it can be arranged that the seller has additional time in the home to move. This is typically not over a couple of weeks or a month. If you need a longer delayed occupancy, sellers can rent the home back from the buyer after closing. Ideally, these arrangements are made during the purchase negotiation and added to the purchase contract.
